Put down your phone, and walk away from it for 5 min, seems easy right, ok how about an hour? A Little bit harder, ok how about a week? Sounds impossible right, well for these 6 Kingston teens this is what they are doing!
Most Teens live and breathe Social Media, Netflix and everything digital. Lilly Rich and 5 other Teens are preparing to partake in this social experiment. That asked them to give up technology for a week.
“The point was to see how much we use technology, to show us that we can actually live without it and to show us how addictive it can be at times,” explained Rich, a member of the Disconnected Challenge experiment run by researchers at Queen’s and the University of Ottawa earlier this year. “I thought it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but by the second day I couldn’t believe how much free time I had.”
Each of them tracked their social media, phone and Internet usage for two weeks and then disconnect for one week. They were allowed to use their phone to contact their parents or in an emergency and watch movies with family members, but usage ended there.
Lilly Rich said she read more, went outside more and even interacted with her family more.
“Before I was on my phone in my room a lot and without that, I would go downstairs and do something with my brother or talk to my parents.”
So maybe it’s time well take a note and our self’s go on a digital detox, How long do you think you could go without your phone or any social media of any kind?
